Who we are

The Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies [APEM] is a non-profit, scientific association, which aims at supporting, promoting and fostering Women’s Studies / Gender Studies / Feminist Studies in all areas of knowledge.

APEM is a national association which aggregates a significant number of experts and researchers from different academic and scientific institutions.

It was created in 1991 and its Statutes were published in Diário da República on 20/06/1991 [III série].

Membership is open to all individuals and organisations which are involved in Women’s Studies.

 

APEM seeks to

    • Facilitate contacts among researchers in this area namely through the regular publishing of a Journal
    • Facilitate access to databases and Documentation Centres through Cooperation Protocols with other institutions
    • Disseminate the results of researches and foster its use both at a theoretical and at a practical level, through an intense information activity and supporting publications, seminars and debates
    • Establish relations with organisations which pursue similar goals in other countries
    • Take public positions on issues relating to Women’s Studies

Become a member

To become an Associate Member you will need to:

  • Fill the inscription form and send it by e-mail or post.
  • Pay the admission fee in the amount of € 20.00 and the annual subscription of € 50.00.
  • Optionally, you may wish to further contribute with higher values.

Payment modalities

  • By check in the amount endorsed to APEM;
  • By bank transfer -  Please mention your name in the description.

When becoming a member you will:

  • Receive two numbers of the ex aequo Journal free of charge referring to the year paid.
  • Receive regular information dissemination on symposia, congresses and conferences organised by APEM or other institutions, besides information on Gender Studies, Women’s Studies and Feminist Studies.

Projects

  • Project CAPACITA (EMPOWERS)
    A partnership between the Portuguese Platform for the Women’s Rights (PpDM) and the Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies

    The project CAPACITA (EMPOWERS), promoted by the Portuguese Platform for the Women’s Rights (PpDM) in partnership with the Portuguese Association of Women’s Studies, runs since January 2014 to January 2016. Headquartered in the Center Maria Alzira Lemos, in Lisbon, it is funded by EEA Grants under the program Active Citizenship.

  • Project e-APEM – Network of Emergent Researchers since 2011

    The e-APEM – Network of Emergent Researchers – has as main objective the expansion of the scope of action of the Portuguese Association for Women's Studies, through the constitution of a network of researchers who recently started their activity and who work in women's, gender or feminist studies.
